The worldwide elimination of polio has been Rotary's top priority since 1985 and after 4 years of there not being a single case of wild polio, Africa has been declared polio free.
This is a monumental achievement and one that Rotarians around the world are celebrating. However, our job is not finished and our efforts must continue so that we prevent wild polio returning both to Africa and worldwide. Rotary members still have a critical role to play in keeping the African region free of wild poliovirus and eliminating the virus in the two remaining countries (Afghanistan and Pakistan) where polio remains endemic.
Polio usually affects children under five, sometimes leading to irreversible paralysis. Death can occur when breathing muscles are affected.
There is no cure but the polio vaccine protects children for life.
